Synopsis

This is a film which uses a different kind of narrative to let the audience feel as involved as possible in the decoding process of the film. A film which uses a now common time lag and repeat of scenes. The film storyline goes as follows; a man’s house is robbed by a thief who has recently been released from prison. In the process of the robbery the thief knocks out the man, before going upstairs and killing his daughter. The man, in so much fury with the lack of police help, finds, kidnaps and kills the man in revenge for his daughters death. However what makes this film so different is the scene repetition and switching which really makes the audience think at the end.

Using law abiding Citizen(18) as a template for one of our scenes. we analysed its success against some other films. We saw that because law abiding citizen is only one story within a film with a death at the end, it gives no opportunity for a sequal, which limits the amount of profit that the film can make, and we took this into account. Unlike the Bourne identity, shreck and saw, who all have had numerous sequals - which gives scope for large revenue and profit- whereas law abiding citizen is a one hit wonder, and no matter how popular, will not replicate the revenue of films with numerous sequals.

Location and site Recce

With us having to delay the start of our filming it gave us a better scope as which site to use. it was very easy for me to reckie my house...because i live there. and also easy for me to reccomend to the group the scene for the kidknapping because it was very near where i used to go to school, and very close to my house.

We decided on my house as the location for the robbery. Because as well as long corridors which is what we wanted, the driveway provided many different angles and shots that we could capture in the build up to the robbery. It was also easier to use my house as a base because the site for the kidknapping was 2 minutes down the road as-well.

As a group and on first arrival of the scene we took some still photo's to analyse whether this was best for our kidknapping scene to take place : PHOTOS.

Script of news Shoot

The script for our news backing story has taken much more time than we would have liked. With me and Marting spending probably the best part of 3 hours recording and re-writing and re-reading to have it worded the best that it can sound, however not only this, but to make sure it times perfectly with the film, because the speech has to come over the right part of the right scenes.

Below is our final draft and what appears in the film.

Beep beep……

A 14-year old girl has been murdered as part of a robbery last night in buckinhamshire. This is one of a string of recent break in’s in the area, but this is the first to result in a murder.

Police say that they have added extra convoys and now have patrol vehicles survey the area regularly. Mr simons, the father of the recently deceased, and who came into close contact with the thief and murderer, before being incapasitated has made a statement to express his anger and disappointment with the neighbourhood watch. He also makes reference to the inmates that have been recently released from nearby Farnham common prison, he said: “ it is clear that with the recently released inmates there is a rising correlation of burglaries”

Beep beep….

Police are now investigating a reported kidnapping in Buckinghamshire on Monday.,the man who was being monitered as a part of rising crime rates in the area has suddenly gone missing and police are saying they fear the worst. The man who was said to be well connected could have been subject to an honour killing with the gang in the area , police are pleading for any information.; they are searching the area, but have yet to find the body.

Filming

in total we have done about 8 hours of filming accross 3 days. the first of these was in the half term when we had the most time to film. Our location was in Beaconsfield where i live, because the nearby streets had the road front houses that we needed for our kidknapping scene, and the long corridors in my house meant we could make more affective use of the interior scenes of the film. after this primary day of filming we knew that we still had much to film and this became apparent in the first stage of editing. many shots were missing, and as a result it made us re-think our film as a whole, and so when we filmed the second time many of the basic principles of the film had changed. it was important to us to do something different this year, as many of the films last year took similar storylines.

Difficulties

With re-takes and jobs, it was very difficult to manage to get everyone together for filming purposes. in addition to this, we had to film on 3 seperate occasions and with the winter light being inconsistant it meant that a lot of shots which we were previously happy with had to be continuinly re-shot everytime we re-filmed to have continuity in the film. in addition to this the staple subject of the film had changed after our first day of filming and so some time was wasted editing the original content, but as a group we decided that it wasnt good enough. in addition to this, beaconsfield (where we filmed) is quite far not only from school but from Oliver and Emmas houses (around an hours drive) so alot of commitment was required for the numerous filming days.

Storyline (explanation of Switching scenes)

If you havnt allready grasped the storyline for our film here is an explanation from the start.
The beggining and second last scenes are identical. the storyline is that a man played by Martin robs another house, in the process beating the homeowner up and killing his wife. However once the homowner wakes from his consciesness he has realised what has happened and remembers who the man is, and has a revenge plan in order. His revenge is in kidknapping this man and killing him, which is actually shown at the beggining of the film too. The news report over the background really helps decode this to the audience.

Inspiration

The main theme for our film sprouted from the inspiration that Law Abiding Citizen had on us as a group. We are using it as an anchor piece for our main storyline, with our own adaptation changing it, with the reverse of scenes and news over the background. This year i have found that my passion is really strong to make our film the peak of what is possible, and i am very pleased with the results. Over weeks and weeks of filming and hundreds of ideas being noted and saved, i think our final piece is really something different, something which has pushed the boundries.
However without the inspiration that we gained from our films it might not have ended the same way. The horrifiyingly terrible-ness that the law abiding citizen aspect of the film has, works perfectly with the switching of scenes and revenge that the original character manages to get.

Brief

production; a five minute film in its entirety to include ancillery tasks : a film magazine review featuring a film, and a poster.

Our group, which includes myself, Martin Aberson, OlliCannon and Emma Eaves decided on this as our coursework title because we thought it was where best that we could let our imagination take shape, especaially in the film. We felt we could utiliste our skills as a group best under this title.
immediatly we began to brainstorm what we thought was going to be best to do in our 5 minute film. after much deliberation we decided that once more, similarly from AS, we could make the most dramatic film by using the action genre as opposed to thriller.
The most common out lay from our brainstorming is that we wanted to do something different in our film. we analysed both films such as Law Abiding Citizen to get our action elemented ideas and then films - for our key idea - which start with a scene near the end of the film and have it repeated. This has been done in many films, such as: The hangover, Final Destination, Goodfellas and Crash. this was to be unconventional in the narrative, which wass very important to us. After deciding on our final idea as a film - we made it more eccentric by deciding to add the soundtrack of a news report, not only will this dieffernetiate it form many other films, but it also makes it easier for the audience to decode what we have done, because it is quite a complicated plot.
